Prezi - tools for school

Here is the link to my prezi. I decided to create a presentation that will help new students understand what digital tools we will be using in class and why. Additional presentations might be centered around specific reading, research for class, or embedding video for "flipped" instruction, etc. Takes a bit of getting used to, but not so bad. I can see that with this tool practice definitely makes perfect :-) http://prezi.com/xamnd_xzssez/tools-for-school/

QR Code for Classroom Use

I used the generator Beth suggested, but my Android phone also has an app for scanning and creating code. Nothing easier! I created a code that takes you to my class wiki page - this would be a great way for kids to be able to check their class page for announcements, updates, etc. Check it out: qrcode

Weebly

I created a webpage using weebly! Check it out at: http://doradosloveenglish.weebly.com/
It was easy. A bit limited in terms of template choices, etc., but I think this will be a good choice for getting beginning students to create an online portfolio of work across the curriculum. They can save links, post work they are most proud of, and track their own progress and growth over time. Might be a nice link to include with a college application...? Google Sites are comparable, but require a bit more expertise - more advanced students might prefer the options there.
Professionally, I will probably continue to rely on my wiki - mostly for the ease/speed of updating.

Audioboo

Audioboo is up! It was so easy to do. I opened the account then uploaded the app to my android phone. I could log into my account from the phone, record and publish. When I checked the webpage, my recording was there! Nice to know you can record something remotely - another good tool for the toolbox :-)

Shelfari

Well, I think you can see this one for yourself, ha. I love the visual component and think it will appeal to the kids better than my reading log (currently on our class web page). I'd like to move the widget to that page so that the webpage continues to be the platform for most class-related tasks. What a nice tool.
I can see this as a way for them to present their independent reading: publish a review using each of the steps...very real-world and relevant.

Twitter

Okay all, twitter account is up - find me at HollyReynolds11. As I mentioned on Beth's blog, I'm still on the fence with twitter for classroom use. I can certainly see it as a tool for professional development. I foresee a classroom discussion about it - how would THEY like to use it as a class? what are the rules? what restrictions on texting? not everyone has unlimited so must be cautious about ramping up someone's phone bill...lots to consider all the way around. Still, we'll wait and see and give it a good try.
